What is the new Electronic Logging Device (ELD) Rule ?
A mandate from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requiring drivers to switch to electronic logging with approved electronic logging devices (ELDs).
Who Needs to Comply?
You need to comply with the ELD mandate If you meet any of the conditions below:
- Drivers who log Hours of Service (HOS)
- Drivers who maintain Records of Duty Status (RODS)
- Fleets with commercial vehicles that weigh more than 10,000 lbs
What are the Exceptions?
- Your driver uses paper logs for no more than 8 days during any 30-day period.
- Your driver is driving a vehicle manufactured before model year 2000.
- Short-haul exemption can be used if your driver:
Has fewer than 12 hours of duty time.
Has fewer than 11 hours of drive time.
Takes at least 10 consecutive hours off between shifts.
Stays within a 100-mile radius from where they start/stop their shift.

What must an ELD compliant solution provide?
Your ELD provider must be able to:
- Electronically record certain data, including:
- Location
- Hours
- Speed
- Odometer
- Be registered with and certified by the FMCSA. (See currently registered solutions.)
- Present log information for the previous seven days plus the current day for law-enforced roadside inspections.
- Electronically track your driver’s HOS.
- Synchronize HOS with engine data to automate driving events based on vehicle movement.
