The Main Street over Wampum Creek Bridge Replacement called for removal and replacement of a bridge in a heavily-traveled, yet remote commercial location. Because the bridge closure meant a 21-mile detour for truck traffic, PennDOT’s bid request was to have the bridge completed in 15 days. Joseph B. Fay’s proposed solution allowed them to bid it at nine days. However, Fay opened the bridge to traffic in just six days and 22 hours. There were no drawings for the original bridge, constructed in 1918, which created concerns on how the new bridge would attach to the current roadway. The company also met PennDOT’s goal for a joint-less bridge with the use of an epoxy overlay. Most notably, sections of the bridge were precast and delivered.
What makes it interesting?
New techniques were used to help accomplish the A+B project within a short time frame, including PennDOT District 11’s first use of an ultra-high-performance concrete to seal deck and approach slab joints without post-tensioning. This allowed the bridge to open the day after sealing. This project won Prefabricated Bridge Elements and Systems Best Project at the 2014 National Accelerated Bridge Construction Conference.
