Introduction

This is the starting point for a free eight-part program built for civil, infrastructure, and utilities contractors. Nothing to sign up for, no assessment at the end, and no product demos. Roughly an hour of viewing total, broken into pieces short enough to watch between meetings, and aimed at anyone who keeps hearing about AI without any reliable way to judge what they’re hearing.

Your host is Michaela Halliwell, who leads platform, data, integrations, and AI products at HCSS and has spent the last several years building AI into software civil contractors use every day. One idea runs through all eight videos, stated up front so you know what you’re getting: AI is only as useful as the information it can access, understand, and act on. Asking why a job is running over means walking from the estimate to the budget, to what the crews actually put in place, and to what the equipment costs. Give a tool all of that, and it can answer the question. Give it one piece, and it will answer anyway, with no drop in confidence and no hint that anything is missing.

From there, the program moves in order. Two videos on what AI actually is and where it gets its knowledge. One video on what separates data AI can work with from data it can’t, which is the one worth watching twice. Two videos on using the tools you can open today and asking them for what you actually want. One video on the ten places AI is already doing real work across preconstruction, operations, fleet, field, and the business side. Finally, two videos that look ahead to AI that acts rather than answers, and to a six-step playbook for getting started. The goal is for you to walk into any AI conversation at your company with your own perspective.

What you'll learn

  • Explain what AI is and how it differs from the software you already run.
  • Judge whether your own company information is ready for AI.
  • Put generative AI tools like ChatGPT to work on real construction tasks.
  • Identify where AI is already earning its place in civil construction.
  • Recognize what has to be true before AI acts on your behalf.
