The Cranbury Brickyard project consists of the remediation of unexploded ordinance (UXO), wetland mitigation, and performance of site work at a site previously used for munitions and chemical manufacturing for the Department of Defense. Operations at the facility ceased in 1954 after an explosion littered the site with live munitions and killed two workers. In 2006 the current owner purchased the site to create commercial warehouse space along the New Jersey Turnpike Corridor. The project also includes 42 acres of NJDEP-protected wetlands that were mitigated by capturing and relocating protected species of turtles and frogs to 10 new vernal pools. A historic on-site landfill was discovered and cleared using up-armored equipment and screening soils while using misting equipment for dust control and PPE to protect the workers.
What makes it interesting?
This project involved lots of danger, with unexploded ordinance, chemical hazards, munitions, and asbestos; relocation of 42 acres of wetlands; including capturing and relocating protected species of turtles and frogs — one of the largest wetland disturbances ever allowed by the NJDEP; and a number of changes to pricing.
