Young Contractors, a subsidiary of the Knife River Corporation, began using HeavyBid in 1998. Their results with HeavyBid were so successful that they considered the benefits of incorporating HeavyJob to manage their jobs. Now, only a short time after their initial HeavyJob purchase, they operate with a 12-user HeavyJob/Manager system and 40 HeavyJob/Field systems. Young Contractors has quickly become the largest HeavyJob customer in the state of Texas.
Young Contractors uses HeavyJob/Manager remotely over a Citrix Server located at the corporate office in Bismarck, North Dakota. This allows management in Waco, Bryan, and Bismarck to all have real-time access to job data. The foremen use laptops to enter employee time, equipment usage, material receipts, and subcontractor progress in HeavyJob/Field. After this information is uploaded to HeavyJob/Manager, payroll data can be sent electronically to J.D. Edwards.
Young Contractors is the first Knife River subsidiary to use HeavyJob exclusively. They found the process to be so efficient and helpful that they gave a demonstration to other Knife River subsidiaries to encourage implementation of HeavyJob as a means to create a highly responsive operations program, complemented by a very efficient payroll process.
The management of Young Contractors had to make a strong commitment to the implementation of HeavyJob. They devoted an entire month of training to get every employee comfortable with the new system. Guy Goodman, Chief Estimator at Young Contractors, says, “Implementation of HeavyJob has to come from the president of the company to successfully get everyone on board for the change.”
Young Contractors also recently purchased The Dispatcher, which is used over Citrix in the same manner as HeavyJob. This enables them to manage equipment fleets for all of their jobs at the Waco and Bryan locations, thus resulting in the greatest possible efficiency.
Young Contractors is a great example of how contractors can profit by using the HCSS family of integrated products.
