Pennsy Supply Bids More Jobs with HeavyBid

Pennsy Supply, Inc. (a division of the Oldcastle Materials Group) has a staff of three estimators bidding an average of approximately 600 jobs a year. Pennsy is South Central Pennsylvania's leading supplier of aggregate, concrete and asphalt and has been utilizing HeavyBid for estimating and bidding projects for the past six years. “Our previous estimating application was a custom made system that worked very similar to the way HeavyBid does; however, it didn't provide anywhere near the amount of detail,” said Estimator and Project Manager, David Steely.

“HeavyBid is very easy to use,” noted Steely, “That's really my favorite thing about the product. With the new Codebook Editor, it is very easy for us to add to and change the current setups. We've got our Biditem Codebook and Activity Codebook set up so when we download a PennDOT project, things are automatically added to the estimate, and we don't have to do manual entry. This is a great benefit, since most of the activities are repetitive.”

This kind of automation and ease-of-use allows Steely and two other estimators to bid 500 jobs a year combined! “When we purchased the system we received on-site training, which was invaluable in giving us direction and enabling us to set up our system for the specific way we wanted to use it.”

Having attended the Annual HCSS User's Group Meeting for five years in a row, Steely was asked to serve on the Presidential Advisory Board at the February meeting this year. “I come back each year to learn new shortcuts and stay abreast of the constant updates and enhancements to the HeavyBid system,” said Steely. “I also like to see how other contractors are using the program.”
